SUBJECT: Library Automation Systems Update Report; Book Systems- Atriuum
Opening:
In an effort to update our districts currently outdated and insufficient library automation system, we have researched and found a system that will meet our needs as a school and district. Book Systems- Atriuum automated system will not only improve our current situation, it will provide us with the ability to keep our system updated. Below we have outlined the important aspects of the Atriuum system into three main categories; What, Included Benefits, and Additional Pluses.
Summary:
Atriuum is an affordable, web-based, automation system compatible with our current Windows 2003 servers. Additionally, Atriuum is designed in an easy-to-learn and user-friendly format with strong technical support and a surplus of included benefits that will enhance our library media program across the curriculum. Benefits include programs that help organize the library media specialist, cater to beginning researchers, and improve accessibility for all patrons. Atriuum is used world wide and comes highly recommended by users as evidenced by the surplus of positive customer comments located in the attachments. We believe that, as future users of Atriuum, we will soon be joining in the accolades.
Discussion:
What is it?
· Atriuum is a web-based integrated system that is accessible from any supported web browser.
· Atriuum provides affordable library software for any size library and is designed to fit the needs of librarians in an easy-to-learn and user-friendly format.
· It’s a web-based system that has free updates from the software vendors.
· Atriuum connects the library to the web through SURFit, which allows the patron to find not just the best resources in the library but also on the web.
· Atriuum is designed specifically for Linux or Windows 2003 Servers
Included Benefits
· An optional Application Service Provider (ASP) that ensures worry-free management and is especially beneficial to those without onsite IT personnel.
· Reliable customer service and tech support.
· Includes KidZviZ, which is specially designed for young searchers, to provide young readers with an attention-grabbing, age-appropriate searching mechanism.
· Offers a collection of supplemental programs that enhance the library experience and management such as:
o Seriels (manage print subscriptions)
o Acquisitions (manage orders)
o Offline Circulation
o MARC (for updating records with the current Reading Level, Interest Level, Point Value, and Quiz information)
o C.E.R.F. (subscription service for access to on-line curriculum and education resources)
o eZcat / eZcat Pro (for simultaneously searching and downloading USMARC records using multiple Z39.50 connections)
· Has a built in cataloging system and add-on cataloging utility, eZcat.
· MARC records enriched with images, summaries, profiles, notes, contents, excerpts, reviews, and more are available dynamically through a partnership with Syndetic Solutions.
· Includes different searches such as classification (Dewey system), recent additions, general interests, award winners, materials by type, etc.
· Patrons can choose either text or visual searching in the OPAC.
Additional Pluses
· Accessible from workstations with supported Web browser.
· 100% browser based giving the patrons better access to library materials and their accounts
· Atriuum can be installed in either centralized or decentralized arrangements.
· Atrium is used by over 219 libraries all over the world.
· Partnered with Bound to Stay Bound to provide a seamless link for collection analysis.

We look forward to discussing further the purchase of Atriuum for the school library at this month’s board meeting and answering any outstanding questions you may have concerning Atriuum. We hope we have thoroughly explained our needs for a new system and how the school will benefit from the adoption of the Atriuum system.
